 Koh Phi Phi

Thailand, Andaman Sea

English (Übersetze diesen text in Deutsch): The Phi Phi Islands are located in Thailand, between the larger island of Phuket (45km east of Phuket) and the mainland. They are politically part of Krabi province, most of which is on the mainland.

Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" meaning "island" in the Thai language) is the largest island of the group, and is the only island with permanent inhabitants, although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Lee (or "Ko Phi Phi Leh"), are visited by many people as well. There are no accommodation facilities on this island, but it is just a short boat ride from Ko Phi Phi Don. The rest of the islands in the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea.

Take a longtail boat to Koh Phi Phi Ley, a small island just to the south of Koh Phi Phi. This is where the "secret beach" is where the movie "The Beach" was filmed. Specifically go to Maya Bay.

Water directly around the island is disappointingly murky and not so good for diving. The beach on the other side of the island, across from where the boats land, is slightly nicer.

* Snorkelling - there are two rocks within swimming distance of Long Beach, where blacktip reef sharks can be seen (dive schools organise guided tours for this). Dive schools take snorkellers on their dive boats, but expect to see only a hint of the underwater marvel visible to scuba divers. The snorkelling off Bamboo and Mosqito Islands is quite good although the reefs are a long way below you at high tide.

- Diving - there are many dive shops, and some very good dive locations. Prices are regulated, so expect to pay the same everywhere. Good diving spots away from the main islands are Shark Point and Anemone Reef.

- It's worth it to have a walk to the Monkey beach. You can go there with a long tail boat. Usually there are canoes for "exercising"!If you are lucky, you will see monkeys asking for bananas!
