Did you know that we, in The Netherlands, live nearby the most beautiful dive areas in western Europe? Although the water from above does not look very appealing, the Zeeuwse Grevelingenmeer and the Oosterschelde under water has more underwater live on the square meter, then for example the Mediterranean Sea. Anemones and sponges color the Zeeuwse underwater landscape in uncountable tints between red and white. All kinds of fish types swim around like goby, scorpion fish, sole, small shark types and even from time to time a sea horse. Also cuttlefish, edible crab and crayfish can be seen in these well protected waters.
People who don’t wanna drive to Zeeland can visit one of the local sweet water lakes. The underwater life in thse lakes is less rich and sometimes less interesting as the Zeeuwse waters, but that is then compensated by underwater objects which have been placed by enthusiastic divers. You must think of buses, linked tires, cars and underwater houses completely with (working) telephone. Most of the times these lakes came into existence by sand- or grit extraction and the water is very clear.
For the diver with more experience The Netherlands gives you the possibility to dive on one of the many wrecks situated on the bottom of the North Sea. On a depth of approximately thirty meters, in sometimes crystal-clear green water, these sunken trawlers, coasters or cruisers give you an oasis full of live which can be discovered.
