 Sodwana Bay

South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal

English (Übersetze diesen text in Deutsch): Located SW of South Africa, S of Mozambique border.

Sodwana Bay is one on the best scuba zone of South Africa, located in a marine reserve (St Lucia Wetlands Park. It is also the most Southern Coral Reef in the World.

Visibility is more than 15m, water temperature between 19°C and 24°C.

December and January are generally very busy since it is the main vacation period for South Africans!

If you choose only one site (or two) from this reef complex, I'd recommend 2 mile (the biggest) and 7 mile (the best).

Sodwana bay's diving is based on a string of reefs for about 9 miles, there are 5 main reef complexes, quarter mile, 2 mile (which I don't have data for and is the biggest reef sporting about 20 named locations, with complete dives ranging in depth from 50 meters to 12 meters), 5 Mile, 7 Mile and 9 mile. The distance is the distance travelled to reach the reef by boat from
Jesser Point. In the area is also Jesser canyon which is the site used to dive for the coelacanths, down to 100 odd meters.

In added to the main reef complexes, there a few smaller reefs which are dived with varying frequency. Although near the main reefs, the amount of sand in between precludes diving thm and the main refs on one dive. A few of
these are ribbon reef (named after the ribbon eels found there), stringer (due to its shape) and roonie's reef (where you can find sea horses, 36 m dive though).

During the busy season, in addition to the sport fishing boats, there are 5-8 dive charters each pushing out 35 boats of 12 divers each every hour.
This is not my choice season to dive there you must understand. This is one of the most dived and most popular locations to dive in south Africa.

Our first seawater dive trip. Weather was not bad at all. Lots of roadworks on the way from Pretoria to the Coast. Had a long drive there. Usually the trip would take about 7 hrs max. This took us almost 10 hours!!! Wish the roadworks would finish so
